Flint Knapper

Richard Dobie is a lifetime resident of Live Oak County. At an early age, he watched his grandparents and parents pick up stone artifacts in the fields, which sparked in him an avid interest in stone tools and artifacts. That interested has turned into a passion for flint-knapping (the art of stone tool making). He sought out expert flint knappers, like J. B. Sollberger of Dallas, Texas, to be mentored on fracture technology and knapping techniques. He has continued to educate himself by reading books and practicing his techniques to perfect his art. He loves to encourage others to keep this art alive by mentoring future flint knappers and demonstrating this art for the public, especially school children. You can usually catch him with a rock in his hand and his knapping tools in the other!

Texian Militia

During the Texas Revolution of 1835 – 1836, the Texas (or “Texian”) forces mainly consisted of locally recruited volunteer militia units. The men of these units were usually from the same town or area, and elected their own officers.

The men of these units generally provided their own weapons, horses and supplies. Their uniforms were generally whatever clothes they had on their back when they volunteered.

This year at Storyfest, the Society of Historical Interpreters of Texas will be displaying arms and equipment of the typical Texian volunteer. Living Historians dressed in period clothing will be on hand to answer questions and give demonstrations on what life was like 175 years ago during Texas’ fight for Independence.
