Stories, Lies and More: George West Storyfest Celebrates 20 Years
by Mary Margaret Campbell
George West, TX (August 25, 2008)--If stories of all kinds, lies, music, and fun interest you,
then George West, the Storytelling Capital of Texas, is the place you should be November 1 as George West Storyfest celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Come hear storytelling at its finest. Featured storytellers this year are Elizabeth Ellis,
Gayle Ross, and Dennis Gaines. You can also hear top Texas tellers like Donna Ingham, Mary Grace Ketner, Mark Babino, Dee Cee Cornish, Joel Nelson, and others tell stories ranging from
folklore about Texas and the world to ghost stories, even cowboy tales and poetry.
Tap your feet to the music of Brian Burns, Lonestar Bluegrass Band, Riptide, Jean Prescott, and other musicians. Shop early for the holidays at arts and crafts booths. Eat tasty food like fajitas, burgers, funnel cakes prepared by local nonprofit groups. Learn about early Texas Rangers who patrolled the area in the 1850s from the Society of Historical Interpreters of Texas and about 19th century family living from folks representing A Day in 1800s Texas. Children can spend the day playing games, petting animals, and having fun in the Children’s Area. Car enthusiasts can vote on their favorite car on
display at the Classic Car Show.
Storyfest Saturday opens with the sound of the George West school band leading the famous
Little Red Wagon Parade. Individuals and groups decorate wagons and pull them by hand on the festival grounds. Storytelling and music alternate on three stages, with continuous entertainment throughout the
day and into the evening.
Be sure to attend the Texas State Liar’s Contest © at mid-afternoon. Come see if
Dennis Gaines, reigning Texas State Liar, can earn that title a third consecutive year. Anyone brave enough to take on Dennis is welcome to give it a shot.
You won’t want to miss Reptile Adventures, one of the most impressive reptile exhibits and
shows in the United States. The four interactive shows are sure to educate, entertain, and fascinate you as you see alligators, giant snakes, and massive lizards up close.
In honor of Storyfest’s 20th anniversary, this year the street dance is free admission. Beginning at 8:15 pm, local newcomer Kerrie Snider will open for Five Card Draw.
On Sunday morning, Storyfest partners with a local church to host Sacred Stories. Everyone is
welcome to listen in.
So come to George West November 1 and help Storyfest celebrate 20 years. Visit www.georgeweststoryfest.org for more information and directions.
